HP vs PCP — Simply Put

Two of the most common ways to spread the cost of a car. Here's the plain-English version so you know what suits you before you ever sign anything.

HP

Hire Purchase

Pay off the full value of the car in equal monthly payments
The car is yours to keep at the end — no big final payment
No mileage limits and no condition charges
Often available on cars up to around 10 years old
Higher monthlies than PCP, but usually cheaper overall if you keep the car long-term

PCP

Personal Contract Purchase

You only pay for the car's depreciation, not its full value
Lower monthly payments — easier on your cash flow
At the end: hand it back, part-exchange, or pay the "balloon" to own it
Usually suits newer cars, often up to around 6 years old
Mileage limits apply — and a large optional final payment if you want to keep it
